CCMS Yondr Cell Phone Pouch Operations

Our school will begin to use Yondr cell phone pouches starting on September 22, 2025 to increase student focus in the classroom. It's important to all of us here at CCMS that each and every member of our school community understands not only how we will use these in our school, but also why we believe this will be a positive addition to our school culture.

About Cell Phone Pouches at Claggett Creek Middle School

As students come into the building through marked entrances, students will secure their phones, earbuds, and smartwatches in individual assigned Yondr pouches. The pouch will remain with students and stay locked throughout the school day.

  • At the beginning of the day, cell phones are turned off (or placed on airplane mode) and stored in an assigned Yondr pouch.
  • Once inside the building, students will lock their own cases.
  • Students will keep their locked pouches with them throughout the day, or store them in their assigned locker.
  • At the end of the school day, students tap the pouch on an unlocking base to unlock their pouch and retrieve their device.

Daily Operations

Yondr pouches are a tool used by our school to help students set boundaries and have shared accountability for creating learning spaces where we all can feel safe, welcome and ultimately, thrive.

Distribution

All students will be checked out their own individual Yondr pouch on Friday, September 19 during their Language Arts class. These pouches will be checked out to students like a library book. All students will be expected to put their phones, earbuds, and smartwatches into their labeled pouch, and lock it shut each day as they enter the school building.

  • Students will keep their pouch with them or store it in their assigned locker.
  • Students are responsible for the care and use of their pouches, just like all other school-distributed materials.
  • Families will be held responsible and be charged a fee ($30) for damaged/lost pouches.

Arrival & Dismissal Procedures

Throughout the school day we will have a set of expectations that students will be personally responsible for following. This is part of our efforts to use this new tool not only to provide additional focus in our learning spaces, but also support our students with setting boundaries and having shared accountability for our school expectations.

Arrival Expectations

As students enter our school building each day, we will have several staff members greeting students and assisting students in unlocking their pouches (as needed).

  • Upon entering the school, students must show a staff member their working device and then they will turn it off their phone (or place it on airplane mode) and place it in their Yondr pouch.
  • Students can then slide their phone, earbuds and smartwatch into the pouch.
    • The goal is to include any items that receive notifications to support in our efforts to limit student distraction.
  • Students can then close the top of the pouch and press the green push-pin button to securely lock the pouch for the day.
No Device?
  • Students without a device will log that they are entering the building without a device, and a ParentSquare notification will be sent out daily for the first couple weeks.
  • Students who report they forgot their phone at home may be subject to:
    • A phone call home to verify the location of the device
    • Search of student belongings

Phones found outside of the assigned pouch throughout the day will be collected and held in the Main Office until parent/guardian/caregiver pick up. The office is open until 4:30pm. Continued violations may result in additional support(s) such as a cell phone contract, lunch detention, student search, and daily phone check in.

Dismissal Expectations

There will be unlocking stations near exit doors on carts, in addition to several staff who will have unlocking handheld magnets.

  • Students will tap the side with the green circular ring to the unlocking base.
  • As they tap the pouch on the base and push the button - the lock will release - and they will be able to retrieve their phone and close their pouch back up.
  • Students who have their phone stored in the office all day will pick them up from the office upon dismissal at 4:00pm - the office is open until 4:30pm.
  • Students will then keep their pouch with them for the following school day.
  • After-school activity? Students should unlock their pouch before going to their club, sport, or after-school activity.

Our goal is that this can be a positive experience for us all, so please reach out to our team if you have any questions or concerns.
