Absence Information

Student Attendance Reporting Number: 503-584-5198

Parents are asked to phone Claggett Creek's attendance line at 503-584-5198 whenever their student is going to be absent from school. In this way, the school can be assured that all absences occur with the knowledge of parents. Parents that don’t call in absences may be contacted by school personnel. These calls strengthen the school and parent communication and also serve as safety checks.

Most student absences are excused by phone conversations with parents. Student absences that are not excused by phone require a written excuse, within three school days, that is signed by a parent/guardian. The excuse should indicate the reason and date(s) for the absence.

Excused Absences:

Students may be excused for the following reasons according to Oregon Statutes: “student illness or illness of a family member, extreme family emergency, or medical appointments.”

Activity/School-Related Absences:

Activity absences or school-related absences are treated as an extension of the school curriculum and are excused. However, it is the responsibility of the student to make up any work that is missed.

Late Arrivals:

If a student is arriving late and has a note excusing him/her, the student is to report to the attendance office. If the student does not have a note, he/she should check in at the attendance office if they arrive before 8:05am, and will have an unexcused absence or tardy. Unexcused tardies and absences will be dealt with as disciplinary matters. The student may have to make up the time during their lunch period or after school. Excuses such as “alarm clock did not go off“, “student overslept“, “student missed the bus“, or “student had to walk” will not be accepted. By law (ORS 339.065) schools can only accept an excuse for tardiness for the following reasons: illness, medical appointments, or a family emergency.

Regular and prompt attendance is very important to students’ success in school. It is each student’s responsibility to be at each class and activity on time. If a student is absent for ten or more consecutive days, they will be withdrawn from the school. One of the most important aspects of a successful education experience relates to regular attendance to all scheduled classes.

Requesting Make-up Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work when they have been absent. If a student is absent for two days in a row, parents may call the office at 399-3701 before 9:00 a.m. to request make-up work. Work, can be picked up after 3:30 p.m. on the same day of the request, if requested before 9:00 a.m.

Advance Absences:

If you are aware in advance of an extended absence your student is responsible for gathering the work they will be missing. Please send a note with your student to the attendance office with the reason, and dates, that they will be absent. Student will then take a copy of the note to each of his/her teachers, to request homework.

Automated Attendance Calling:

Our school places great importance on student attendance. Students need to be in every class each day in order to make the middle school years the best that they can be. We want to work with parents to discourage any “skipping” of classes.

We know that “at risk” behaviors may arise in middle school. Often problems start with “skipping". The best way to deal with this issue is by contacting all parents as quickly as possible when a multiple-period or full-day absence occurs.

To contact parents, we are using an automated attendance calling system.

How Does It Work: If multiple-period or full-day absences occur, parents will receive a telephone call with an automated message. Parents may then call the Attendance Office recorder and leave a message regarding the absence.
